The Kingdom of Kotte was one of Sri Lanka’s most powerful indigenous kingdoms before European colonisation. Rising to prominence under King Parakramabahu VI in the 15th century, it became an important centre of politics, trade, religion, literature, and the arts. Protected by natural waterways and marshlands, Kotte developed strong defensive structures and maintained valuable trade links across the Indian Ocean. Although the kingdom declined following the arrival of the Portuguese and internal political conflicts, its ancient ramparts, moats, archaeological remains, and cultural heritage continue to reflect its important place in Sri Lankan history.
